Black Noir was a direct clone of Homelander created by Vought-American, engineered using Stormfront's DNA as a secret fail-safe weapon designed for one singular purpose: to eliminate Homelander should he ever become too dangerous or step beyond the boundaries Vought had set for him. He was, in every measurable sense, Homelander's physical equal — a perfect copy built to destroy the original.
However, years passed and Black Noir found himself unable to fulfill the one purpose he had been created for. Homelander, contrary to what Vought may have anticipated, was implied to have conducted himself as a generally stable and controllable asset for much of his career, giving Vought no justification to activate the contingency. For Black Noir, this was catastrophic. A being engineered with a single directive, denied the fulfillment of that directive indefinitely, he began to deteriorate psychologically. With no identity beyond his function, no purpose beyond killing a man who had not yet warranted killing, Black Noir grew increasingly psychotic as the years wore on and his reason for existing remained unrealized.
Unable to bear the paralysis any longer, Black Noir took matters into his own hands. He began secretly impersonating Homelander, using his identical physiology to pose as the original and commit a series of escalating and monstrous crimes — including rape, murder, and cannibalism — all while ensuring that photographic evidence was captured and preserved. Every atrocity he committed was attributed to Homelander. Every piece of documentation pointed to Homelander. Black Noir's plan was methodical and patient: manufacture the descent into villainy that Homelander had never actually undergone, and in doing so, create the conditions that would finally authorize his termination. He needed Homelander to become a monster. So he became one in Homelander's name.
The events of September 11, 2001 represent one of the darkest chapters in the history of The Seven and one of the most damning indictments of Vought-American in the entire comic series. On that day, The Seven were meant to intervene and respond to the hijackings. However, the operation was a catastrophic failure of both competence and character. Black Noir himself flew out to intercept one of the hijacked planes, but upon reaching it, he proved completely useless — as the characters later admitted, none of them had any training whatsoever for a hostage or hijacking scenario. They had no plan, no knowledge of counter-terrorism procedure, and no understanding of how to handle a commercial aircraft mid-flight. Black Noir's intervention amounted to nothing. Meanwhile, Homelander and Queen Maeve attempted to intercept another of the hijacked planes, but Homelander made the decision to abandon the passengers rather than risk the optics of a failed rescue — leaving everyone on board to die. As Butcher and others would later reflect, the hard truth was that Homelander, Lamplighter, and Maeve were the real cowards that day — but Black Noir got there first and simply had no idea what to do. The entire episode exposed The Seven not as the world's greatest heroes, but as undertrained, unprepared celebrities with powers and no accountability. This act of collective failure and cowardice, concealed from the public for years, became one of the most explosive secrets in the series and a cornerstone of The Boys' case against Vought-American.
One of the most significant and consequential events tied to Black Noir's campaign of manipulation — though one that involved the real Homelander and other members of The Seven — was the treatment of Starlight upon her induction into the team. When Annie January joined The Seven as its newest member, she was subjected to sexual coercion by several of her new teammates, including Homelander and A-Train, as an implicit condition of her place on the team. Black Noir was present during this incident. The event established early on the true nature of The Seven — not as heroes, but as an organization in which power was weaponized against the vulnerable, and in which membership came at a profound personal cost. For Starlight, it became a defining trauma that shaped her arc across the entire series.
Herogasm is one of the most infamous recurring events depicted in the comic series — an annual, secret gathering of superheroes organized and funded by Vought-American, held under the cover of a fictional crisis that supposedly required all the world's heroes to work together. In reality, Herogasm was a massive, private debauchery — a week-long event in which the superhero community indulged in every excess imaginable, entirely away from public scrutiny. The Boys infiltrated the event as part of their ongoing investigation into Vought and the superhero community, gathering intelligence and witnessing firsthand the profound moral rot beneath the surface of the superhero brand.
